InTASC Standard 5

InTASC Standard #5: Application of Content

InTASC Standard #5: Application of Content: The teacher understands how to connect concepts and use differing perspectives to engage learners in critical thinking, creativity, and collaborative problem solving related to authentic local and global issues (InTASC 2013).

Brief Description of Evidence:

In the spring semester of 2023 in my EDUC 240 Introduction to Physical and Health Education for Elementary Teachers class, I created a healthy snacks and physical activities calendar. My calendar included 30 days of these activities. I rotated between a physical activity and a healthy snack splitting them up into 15 days each. I also created a letter for the students to take home to their parents informing them of the calendar activities and the reward for the students that complete 15 of them.

Analysis of What I Learned:

During my EDUC 240 class I learned the importance of physical activity in and outside of the classroom. I also learned that involving parents in classroom activities is very important in building relationships with them. My activity calendar was an at home activity for students to complete with their families. This helps parents feel involved in their students' school work and helps students have fun while being active. While creating this I also learned the importance of putting down exact measurements and being specific on my physical activities. When creating the physical activities I had to make sure they included FITT (Frequency, Intensity, Time, and Type) so students could learn the different types of workouts.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the InTASC Standard:

I demonstrate my competence for InTASC Standard #5 by using critical thinking and creativity to come up with fun and engaging physical activities that students could complete at home. I also had to use critical thinking and creativity to come up with healthy snack ideas that used ingredients that most households typically already have. I connected different concepts by bringing healthy eating and physical activity together on one calendar. My activities involve collaborative problem solving when students and parents work together to figure out the different workouts on the calendar. A theorist that connects to my artifact is David Kolb and his Experiential Learning Theory. This theory states that “...knowledge is created through the transformation of experience” (Kendra Cherry).
